An Compassion of People We Don't Know: The Way a Gentleman I Only Just Encountered Helped Me Obtain the Role That Changed My Life

In the final years of the 1980s, I was beginning a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a friend. Because my travel mate was considering starting a postgraduate program in New York, we had booked a 14-day stopover there en route to London.

We arrived at the postgrad residence, a sizeable 10-storey building on the Manhattan's Upper West Side known as International House. Setting down our luggage, we went directly to the canteen, where we grabbed food, took a seat, and began chatting with people eating there.

Adjacent to my seat was an Iraqi man studying engineering at Columbia University. He inquired what I my profession was, and I shared that I had recently completed my studies with a scientific background and had been conducting research with electron microscopy.

He pointed out that there was an research lab at the institution – close to the engineering department, which was how he knew about it. He recommended that I should apply for a job with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was about to fly to Europe and, more critically, I didn’t have a US visa.

The following day I went out exploring, returning to the canteen that night. The man from Iraq walked over to me and told me that he had arranged an interview for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Because he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but immediately explained to my prospective employer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

In typical New York fashion – a place where everything seems achievable – she said: “We can make that happen. When can you start?” I missed my plane to London.

I held that position for three years. An advantage of the role was that I also received no-cost classes at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to earn a master’s of international affairs.

I lost touch with him and I don’t even know his full name, but his incredible act of kindness altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I lacked the courage or self-assurance to approach someone at an prestigious college and ask for a job. Additionally, I had long dreamed to take classes in another country, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that educational benefit.

Critically, that gig at Columbia paved the way for a role in Europe where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I now have four wonderful sons and daughters. That encounter altered everything. That helpful person set me on a different course in life, and I’m forever grateful.
