Pat Cummins has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.
The Australian selection chief the selector has stated that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming England-Australia contest.
There were concerns that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.
Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Western Australia.
The selector shared that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of participating.
"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations involved, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.
"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, we'll adjust."
Previous Setbacks
Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.
He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of several home seasons in four years.
The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.
The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.
Alternative Arrangements
In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.
Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.
Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."
"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, we opted to take a cautious route."
