European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.

  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in return for increased assistance, following concluding a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the removal of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with historical international actions.
