No fewer than thirteen passengers killed and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the year before. This project was closely associated with his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The development of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in public works. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled significant questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party urged an urgent halt in the building and running of all similar projects.

This pause was requested while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the president maintained that the train had been running in total adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and management of these strategic projects.
